Root Canal

When the tooth’s nerve becomes inflamed or infected, either due to trauma or extensive decay, it is very likely that tooth will cause tremendous pain. In order to relieve the pain, the infected internal contents of the tooth need to be removed by performing a root canal treatment.

The goal of root canal treatment is to clean out and disinfect the internal dental pulp (arterioles, venules, nerves and  tissues) space. This treatment will prevent the tooth from becoming re-infected. Generally root canal therapy can take two, three or multiple visits.

Common symptoms of tooth damage include:

  • Abscessed Teeth
  • Cracked Teeth
  • Dislodged Teeth
  • Knocked-Out Teeth
  • Tooth Pain
  • Discolored Tooth
First Treatment
The first treatment is often an emergency with the objective to alleviate the pain. This treatment is performed under local anesthesia to remove the damaged nerve while saving the tooth. Generally a local antibiotic and anti-inflammatory will be placed in the internal pulp chamber.
Second Treatment
During the second treatment, the dentist will clean and shape the dental pulp space and prepare the tooth for a crown to be placed at a subsequent appointment. A dental crown will protected the weakened tooth from breaking strengthen the tooth. Following placement of the crown, the entire tooth will still function and look like the surrounding teeth.

Thomas Gonzales, DDS has been performing this procedure for over 40 years. Rest assured he has advanced training in the treatment of diseases and injuries to the dental pulp, root and surrounding tissues of the teeth.
